Benefits of IP Backup

IASO Backup presents innovative Backup over IP technology that allows online data backup and restore from any Internet connection.

There are many advantages of IP Backup: it is simple to use, involves low costs and secure and effective. The greatest benefit is that no human intervention is needed.

With IP Backup data is stored on disk via the internet. The disk is set up elsewhere (e.g. in a data center), but the data is always accessible and available quickly via the internet.

Very efficient IASO backup software solution is created featuring the innovative IP backup technology. It is able to detect which files are new and which files have changed. The IASO Backup software ensures that only the new or altered data is sent to the backup server. This means you can transport the data to the server over a (slow) Internet connection daily and to keep several copies there. When data is lost you can go back in time and even decide which version you want to restore. Learn more about the brand new IASO Backup 2010.

Broadband Internet has become available at a bargain and is now widespread with consumers and small businesses. However, "broadband" is a relative term, as with DSL upload speeds averaging around 512 Kbit to 1 Mbit, there still is a wide gap with the Gigabit speeds we are used to in the LAN environment.

As the perfect backup should be stored in a remote location, it would be ideal to be able to use the ubiquitous Internet to connect to such a location and transport the backup data to it.

The bandwidth gap between the LAN and Internet bandwidth requires the backup data to be reduced to an amount that can be transported within a reasonable time frame. That is exactly what IASOs data reduction technology delivers.

Backup 100 Gigabyte over 512 Kbit DSL?

In practice the IASO Backup over IP technology fits most organisations, without upgrading the existing Internet connection. Larger companies with more data generally have bigger pipes than smaller organisations with less data volume.

Considering an 8 hour backup window and a 0,5% real changes, a 100 Gigabyte dataset for instance requires a daily 512 MB to be added to the backup, a volume that can be transported easily over a 512 Kbit DSL upload.

The following table illustrates the possibilities of IASO Backup over IP at different line speeds:

In the above calculations we have ignored the fact that the IASO software also applies ordinary data compression to each data block that is sent to the backup server, which will obviously improve the results even further.

Recovery

Moving backup data off-site is obviously only one side of the equasion. What about getting large amounts of data back in case of a disaster? Fortunately most DSL connections are assymetric, with faster download then upload speeds. A 1.024/8192 up/down line is quite common these days

Although it is possible to backup very large datasets over ordinary Internet connections, applying the IASO technology for disaster recovery requires further consideration. Depending on the volume of the business critical data - which could of course be only a minor proportion of your total dataset - and your line speed it is easy to determine how much time it takes to retrieve that data. If this time it too long to meet your recovery objectives, alternative solutions need to be devised. IASOs Backup Bank service for instance offers the option to have your data restored locally in the datacenter to a removable disk, which can be couriered to your location for further restoration.
