Recovery objectives
Backup and recovery needs to be considered against the background of your business operations. The right decision for a backup solution is a trade off between cost alternatives:
A backup solution costs money, but so does downtime and data loss.
Technologists therefore prefer to discuss recovery objectives in terms of 2 components:
- Recovery point objective (RPO) The maximum amount of data that may get lost in case of a total system failure. Typically, in a daily full backup scenario, that amount equals to one day of work.
- Recovery time objective (RTO) How much time it takes between the disaster and the moment that your system is back online. This depends of course on multiple factors, such as the availability of replacing hardware, time required to restore the actual data, etc.

The IASO Backup solutions are designed to outperform traditional backup solutions when it comes to both recovery point and recovery time, at a comparable cost level. Nevertheless setting up the backup requires careful consideration of business objectives and specific circumstances, both technical and organisational. The IASO partner network is a good starting point for advise and implementation.
